Welcome, Martina Zinn! Ms. Zinn has joined the A3 Teaching Team as the Art teacher at Starr-Iva Middle School! 🎨 Ms. Zinn attended West Virginia University and UNC-Asheville. She has a degree in Art with K-12 teaching licensure. Martina is a painter and also loves hand building with clay. Ms. Zinn has taught high school art for 12 years and has also taught in Maryland and North Carolina. She and her husband raise registered Boer Goats on their farm, Cherry Blossom Creek, which they will be relocating from the mountains of North Carolina to Abbeville, South Carolina. Ms. Zinn loves raising and showing goats, fishing, hunting, farming, painting, and dancing. She is very excited to start her new journey as a Starr-Iva Middle School Tiger! Welcome, Martina Zinn!

Mrs. Burdette and Ms. Smith's 6th grade social studies classes went on an architectural exploration throughout Egypt’s many ancient structures. Students got the chance to study several images of pyramids, housing, and monuments of Egypt and explore all the possibilities that when into the construction of these structures. Students used Keva building blocks to see if they could build the landmarks to match what the Egyptians did. You could say they were walking like the Egyptians!

This morning the administration at Starr-Iva Middle School received a report that a student had a gun in his book bag. Administration and law enforcement immediately investigated and determined that it was a toy gun. The district is following appropriate discipline policies and procedures at this time. Eighth-grade students were given parent surveys today from the SC Dept. of Education. We are asking that parents complete these and have them turned in no later than Friday, May 3rd. The parent survey results are a vital role in helping our school identify better ways to work with parents. The results of the parent surveys will be included anonymously in our school report card.
Crescent and Starr-Iva students participated in Solo & Ensemble on Saturday at West Oak Middle School. During the event, students formed small chamber groups and rehearsed independently. Four of the groups received a Superior rating, and five groups received an Excellent rating. Additionally, the Crescent Percussion Ensemble received a perfect score. The Spring Concert will be held at Iva First Baptist next Thursday, May 9th beginning at 6 PM. It will feature the SIMS Beginner/Concert Bands, and Crescent Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band, and Jazz Band. Several student compositions will be featured as well!
SIMS Literacy Night, A Taste of SIMS: Seasoned With Literacy, will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m. The night will feature students' work, book talks, and projects.

Saturday, the SIMS FFA Tool ID Team traveled to Lexington Technology Center for the SC state competition. The team consisted of Jaxson Blanton, Brent Erwin, Karlie Whitaker, and Levi Bouknight. Our 7th graders placed 9th out of 19 schools with a total score of 275 out of 300. Starr-Iva was the highest ranked middle school team in the contest. Jaxson Blanton had a score of 97 out of 100, putting him in a 7-way tie for 4th place. We are very proud of the way our middle schoolers competed so confidently against 75 other students, most of which were high schoolers. They conducted themselves well and were a pleasure to be around. Congratulations to these individuals!

Penny Wars Update: So far our SIMS students have raised a total of $110.20 for Special Olympics! One of the Penny War rules is that silver money deducts points. With that being said, the grade breakdown is as follows: 6th grade is at -$13.25. 7th grade is at $60.67. 8th grade is at $6.93. If you have a sixth grader at SIMS load him or her up with pennies and bills so that they can get on the positive side! The grade that raises the most money will win a hat day!

The Penny War has begun! The 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are competing against each other to see who can raise the most money for Special Olympics. Students earn points for their grade by bringing in pennies or bills. Students can deduct points from other grades by bringing in silver coins. The Penny War will run from Tuesday, Oct. 2-Friday, Oct. 12. The grade that raises the most money will win a free hat day!
