Three decades after running on Crescent High School's first-ever cross country team, Josh Gray is returning to the course where it all began, this time as the Tigers' Head Boys Cross Country Coach.
For Gray, this isn't simply a new coaching position. It's an opportunity to honor a legacy, invest in student-athletes, and continue building a program that has meant so much to him throughout his life.
A 1995 Crescent High School graduate, Gray was a member of Crescent's inaugural cross country team under Crescent Hall of Famer Coach Jim Crawford. The program was introduced in 1992, and Gray competed from his sophomore through senior years, helping the Tigers capture the 1992 Region Championship before making school history as members of Crescent's first-ever State Championship team in 1993.
"Coach Crawford had a tremendous impact on my life, not just as a runner, but as a person. I feel the weight of carrying on something he started so successfully, and I'm excited to carry the torch."
Throughout the summer, Coach Gray has been hard at work recruiting new runners, connecting with students, and laying the foundation for the program's future. He understands that success won't happen overnight, especially in one of the state's most competitive regions, but he believes championships begin long before the starting gun.
"The potential to win is in any school," Gray said. "You just have to build the culture and put in the work."
Gray's approach extends beyond race times and championship trophies. As an English teacher and Teacher Cadet instructor at Crescent High School, he has spent years investing in students inside the classroom. Now, he hopes to make that same impact on the trails by developing young men who are committed, disciplined, and willing to challenge themselves every day.
His connection to Anderson School District 3 extends beyond Crescent High School. Gray and his wife, Krista, a librarian at Flat Rock Elementary School, have been married for 24 years and are raising four children. Their daughter, Lydia, is a junior at North Greenville University, while their sons, Luke and James, are seniors at Crescent High School. Their youngest son, Jack, begins his freshman year at Crescent this fall.
The runners may be different. The uniforms may have changed. But the torch that Coach Jim Crawford lit in 1992 is in the hands of someone who understands exactly what it means to carry it.
