On the eve of Memorial Day and two nights after our 2022 Crescent Graduation, a few thoughts. Feel free to scroll on… I came back to school this evening to do a little work at the softball fields and run the campus afterwards. There are very few times when our campus is empty, but when it is at night are some of my favorite times. Tonight I decided to run the majority of campus. It was right at dusk, so I got to see the beauty of our campus and ponder some things as well. Considering that we said farewell to our Class of 2022 two nights ago, and the significance of holidays like tomorrow, tonight had a little more meaning to this sentimental guy. As I ran, I saw and thought of several things that make me proud to be a Tiger: **I passed our newly surfaced stadium, where we graduated Friday night in what was purposefully designed as the first major event on the field. Much more will happen there….football games, soccer matches, rec events, etc. Homecoming and Pumpkin Bowl queens will be crowned there, and there will be hundreds of celebrations and smiles and even a few losses and tears….MEMORIES will be made there, just as there have been at Crescent since 1956. **I ran around our brand new track, and my mind thought back to this last season for our soccer and track teams. Our track season was meaningful in multiple ways, dedicated to David Richardson (more on that later), and many of our kids ran this year as tribute to him. I think in pride of our soccer teams and their parents and coaches…..who made this season work SUCCESSFULLY on a shared field. That’s one of the reasons why Crescent is great….folks make it work, and work well. That’s what Tigers do. **I saw our state-of-the art, still new baseball facility, the one that very often puts our visitors in awe when they come to play here. That’s always a great sign! I always love to try to position myself when possible so I can watch reactions of first-time visitors to our “country” campus. The surprise on their faces is a joy and point of pride for me. **I passed by the beautiful, modern Band Tower that sits along our “Crescent-shaped” curve on Highway 81. If you never knew how Crescent got the name, now you do! As I passed the band area, I thought with excitement about the enthusiasm of our incoming Band Director when he was introduced, how hard our band students work each year to be their very best, and the excitement on their faces and in their words as they remembered the good times this year and look forward to next year as well. *I ran through our magnificent Ag Arena and - as always - shook my head in awe at what an AWESOME facility that is for our kids and our community. The annual Daniel Jarrard Rodeo wrapped up there a few weeks back. If you think that is simply a rodeo, come next year. It’s about LOVE and COMMUNITY in more ways than you can name or imagine. **I ran by a dumpster container that has been placed in the last couple of days behind the school. Yes, a dumpster. At first thought, that means nothing but trash, but what it really means is PROGRESS. As we wrap up this school year this coming week, our leadership, our facilities folks, and our custodians are sitting on READY already preparing for next year. Always looking ahead to make things the best they can be for the students, faculty, and staff in our school and our district. **I looked over and saw our beautiful pond that is likely one of the nicest scenes on the campus of any high school in the state. Just beautiful. **Also tonight, I saw a banner at the track and a helmet sticker in the softball office dedicated to the memory and legacy of Coach David Richardson. A TRUE TIGER. David in so many ways epitomized what made our school and our community so special. A community that - in many ways like David was - is built on friendship, love, kindness, laughter, and the willingness and desire to compete and win. **And I finished up - of course - at Gary and Kathy Adams Field. The signs across the outfield speak volumes about hard work, drive, and success. Two Tiger legends who epitomize in so many ways what it means to be a TRUE TIGER. Nights like tonight make me THANKFUL to be a Tiger. I am thankful to be a Crescent graduate and an A3 employee and coach. If I never worked or coached here another day - or if I am here for a bit more depending on HIS will - I will always be proud to have been a part of a district where it’s leadership always puts STUDENTS first. As we approach Memorial Day tomorrow, I am also THANKFUL for the ultimate sacrifices made by so many in the history of our nation so we can essentially take for granted so many of the things I mentioned above. Think of all the moments in history when our TRUE HEROES had literal life or death choices to make….and they made the decisions that led to their ultimate sacrifice to defend our country and the freedoms we have today. As I came in from the run, I could hear the fireworks celebration in Iva commemorating Memorial Day. That’s COMMUNITY. That’s why I love this place. And it’s why I love this country. Proud to be a TIGER. Proud to be part of this COMMUNITY. Proud to be an AMERICAN, and hope you are as well……imperfections and all. Take a moment tomorrow to remember those who have sacrificed for America. Happy Memorial Day, Tiger Nation. #TigersTogether
